Rep. Dennis Kucinich will launch a national “Shut the Chamber!” campaign in Madison, WI tomorrow, 2/12/13, at the Barrymore Theatre. According to Wisconsin Wave, the campaign seeks to hold the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce (WMC) to account for buying elections, bribing politicians, and writing anti-worker and anti-environment laws.
In a Monday morning editorial, the Capital Times detailed the damage done by the chamber and WMC:
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is an overwhelming obstacle to American enterprise, ingenuity and growth.
And its Wisconsin affiliate, the Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce corporate lobby, aligned with Gov. Scott Walker two years ago today to begin implementing the wrongheaded anti-labor and anti-public services and anti-public education agenda that has made Wisconsin No. 42 in job creation — trailing all of our neighbor states and the national averages.
Bought and paid for by multinational corporations, the U.S. Chamber and WMC support free-trade deals that shutter U.S. factories, ship jobs overseas and leave American communities devastated. They attack the rights of working Americans to collectively bargain, and are in the forefront of efforts to cut the wages and benefits of working Americans.
And they are ever at the ready to promote the sort of austerity schemes that now threaten Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
Perhaps worst of all, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce seek to undermine democracy by flooding corporate cash into campaigns with the purpose of buying elections — and government. They seek that power to attack public health and public safety protections, to take away legal protections for Americans who are injured in the workplace, and to eliminate the ability of families to hold polluters and producers of unsafe products to account.
The “Shut the Chamber!” campaign seeks accountability:
On Tuesday night at the Barrymore Theatre, former Congressman Dennis Kucinich will headline a rally to launch a national campaign to “Shut the Chamber!”
On Wednesday, Shut the Chamber campaigners will rally outside the annual WMC gathering at Monona Terrace, with picketing during the day and a 5 p.m. rally to declare: “It is time to clean the house of government and remove the corporate lobbyists from the temple of democracy. It is time to shut the chamber.”
Wisconsin Wave recommends buying tickets to the Kucinich event in advance. There are four different ticket levels, ranging in price from $10-250. Tickets can be purchased from the Wisconsin Wave website or via The Barrymore.
